Fishing in Killarney

Three world-class lakes, a renowned salmon river, and rare Arctic char that have inhabited these waters since the last ice age.

The lakes of Killarney have been fished for millennia. Today they hold salmon, sea trout, brown trout and the remarkable Arctic char — a cold-water species that has survived in these lakes since glaciers covered Ireland, making Killarney one of the most historically significant fisheries in Europe.

What you can fish for

🐟
Atlantic salmon
Run the River Laune from spring to autumn. Best months are March–June and September–October. Fly fishing only on most beats.
🎣
Brown trout
Year-round in the lakes. Lough Leane holds excellent stocks. Fly fishing, spinning and trolling all permitted in designated areas.
❄️
Arctic char
A glacial relic found in the deepest parts of Muckross Lake. Rare — catch and release only. A bucket-list catch for serious anglers.
🌊
Sea trout
Enter the River Laune from June onwards. Often caught in the same sessions as salmon. Spectacular fighters on light tackle.

Where to fish

Permits & licences
You need a State Fishing Licence (available from most tackle shops and online at fishinginireland.info) plus a permit for the specific water you're fishing. The Killarney Angling Association manages most local waters — contact them for current permit availability and beat information. Tackle shops in town can advise on current conditions.

Guides & equipment

Several experienced local guides operate on the Killarney lakes and River Laune. A guided day is highly recommended for first-time visitors — local knowledge of where fish are running, which flies are working, and how to navigate the boats makes an enormous difference to success rates.

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has a dedicated fishing secretary who can arrange guided days on the lakes for club guests and visitors. Alternatively, tackle shops on New Street can recommend independent guides.
