Killarney works well for families โ the National Park provides an outdoor playground that genuinely engages children, and the town has enough rainy-day options to keep things moving when the Kerry weather decides to assert itself. The key is to lean into the outdoors when conditions allow and have a Plan B ready when they don't.

Jaunting cars
The jaunting car is one of the best family choices in Killarney โ children love the novelty of the horse-drawn carriage, the jarvey's stories keep everyone entertained, and it covers ground through the National Park without requiring young legs to do the walking. The routes to Muckross House and through the Gap of Dunloe are both well-suited to families with children of most ages.
Cycling in the National Park
Cycling through the National Park on the largely car-free park roads is excellent for families โ flat enough for younger children, scenic enough to keep everyone interested, and with wildlife encounters (deer, eagles) always possible. Bike hire outlets in Killarney town have children's bikes and child seats for younger passengers. The route from town to Ross Castle and Muckross House is ideal for families.
Boat trips on the lakes
Traditional boat tours from Ross Castle are an easy family win โ minimal effort, maximum scenery, and the possibility of seeing eagles over the lake. The shorter tours of Lough Leane are well-suited to younger children; older children can handle the full lake circuit as part of the Gap of Dunloe day.
Torc Waterfall
The walk to Torc Waterfall is ideal for families โ short enough not to exhaust young children, dramatic enough to impress them. The 20-metre cascade at the end of a 15-minute woodland walk is a reliable crowd-pleaser. The surfaced path is pushchair-friendly as far as the viewing area.
The deer in Killarney National Park are wild and numerous โ spotting one on a morning walk through the park is a reliable highlight for children of all ages.
Rainy day options
Kerry weather being what it is, every Killarney visit needs a rainy day plan. Muckross House guided tours keep children occupied for a couple of hours. Killarney town itself has plenty of shops and cafรฉs. The cinema on New Street is a reliable backup. For a longer rainy day, the Kerry County Museum in Tralee is 30 minutes away and has excellent hands-on exhibits covering Kerry's history and wildlife.
