The National Park, the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and the surrounding landscape offer everything from gentle lakeside strolls to serious mountain days β and the quality of the scenery at every level is exceptional. You don't need to be a mountaineer to have a remarkable walking experience here; some of the most rewarding walks in the park take less than an hour.

Short walks β under 2 hours
Torc Waterfall
The classic short walk β well-surfaced path through ancient woodland to a 20-metre waterfall. Continue above the falls for panoramic lake views most visitors miss.
Muckross Lake Loop
A flat loop around Muckross Lake through National Park woodland β passing Muckross Abbey, Reenadinna Yew Wood and the Meeting of the Waters.
Ross Castle to Muckross
Lakeside path from Ross Castle south through the National Park to Muckross House β one of the most beautiful flat walks in Kerry.
Knockreer Demesne
Parkland walk on the edge of Killarney town β views over Lough Leane with Ross Castle and the mountains behind. Accessible directly from the town centre.
Half-day walks
Old Kenmare Road
A historic mountain route between Killarney and Kenmare β outstanding views over the Upper Lake, genuine wilderness feel, and largely off the tourist trail.
Mangerton Mountain
A rounded mountain south of the Reeks with a high corrie lake β the Devil's Punchbowl β near the summit. Less dramatic than the Reeks but more accessible.
Full-day mountain walks
Carrauntoohil via Devil's Ladder
Ireland's highest peak via the standard route β a serious mountain day requiring proper equipment and navigation ability. Not for beginners.
Gap of Dunloe + Lake Return
The classic Killarney full day β walk the Gap, take a boat back across the three lakes. One of the great day experiences in Ireland.
Purple Mountain
Excellent mountain views over the Gap of Dunloe without the challenge of Carrauntoohil β the ideal step up for confident walkers.
Coomloughra Horseshoe
Ireland's finest ridge walk β Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh and Caher in a single day. Experienced hillwalkers only.
Local tip: The National Park trails around Muckross and Ross Castle are excellent in any weather β well-surfaced and sheltered by woodland. Save the mountain walks for clear days and always check the Met Γireann mountain forecast before heading above 600 metres.
