Aghadoe sits on a low hill northwest of Killarney town, overlooking the full sweep of Lough Leane and the mountains beyond. It is one of the oldest ecclesiastical sites in Kerry โ an early Christian settlement that predates the Norman arrival by centuries. Today the remains of a round tower and a Romanesque church survive on the hilltop, alongside a later castle, and the view from the site is one of the finest in the county.

The round tower
Round towers were built across Ireland between the 9th and 12th centuries โ tall, narrow stone towers attached to monastic settlements that served as bell towers, places of refuge and symbols of ecclesiastical prestige. The round tower at Aghadoe survives only as a stump, having been largely demolished over the centuries, but what remains is enough to give a sense of the scale and quality of the original building. It dates from around the 10th or 11th century.
The Romanesque church
The church at Aghadoe contains one of the finest Romanesque doorways in Kerry โ carved stonework typical of the 12th century Irish Romanesque style, with geometric patterns and decorative moulding around the arch. The church itself is roofless but the walls stand to near their original height, and the quality of the surviving stonework gives a clear impression of the ambition of the original builders.
Standing at Aghadoe looking out over Lough Leane, you are standing where monks stood 1,400 years ago โ watching the same mountains, the same water.
The view
The view from Aghadoe is one of the reasons to visit beyond the ruins themselves. The hilltop looks directly over Lough Leane โ the full lake spread below, Ross Castle on the far shore, Innisfallen Island in the middle, and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks rising behind. It is one of the classic Killarney panoramas and largely unknown to visitors who stick to the main tourist routes.
