Ross Island juts into Lough Leane from its western shore, with Ross Castle at its tip โ€” one of the most photographed landmarks in Killarney. But beneath the surface of this woodland peninsula lies something far older and more remarkable than any castle. The copper mines of Ross Island are among the oldest in Europe, worked by Bronze Age miners approximately 4,500 years ago. The ore extracted here helped supply the copper that defined an entire age of human civilisation.

Ross Island Copper Mines โ€” at a glance

The Bronze Age mines

The mines at Ross Island were worked from approximately 2400 BC โ€” making them among the earliest copper mines in northwest Europe. The miners used a technique called fire-setting: lighting fires against the rock face to heat it, then dousing it with cold water to crack the stone, before extracting the ore with stone hammers. No metal tools were used โ€” the miners were creating the first metal tools, not yet using them.

Archaeological excavations at Ross Island in the 1990s and 2000s revealed not just the mine workings but the remains of the Bronze Age community that worked them โ€” pottery, food remains, and evidence of a sophisticated operation that was supplying copper ore across a wide area. The research established Ross Island as one of the most significant Bronze Age industrial sites in Europe.

The miners of Ross Island were creating the metal age โ€” working copper with stone tools to produce the first bronze that would change human civilisation.

Ross Castle

At the tip of the peninsula stands Ross Castle โ€” a tower house built in the late 15th century by the O'Donoghue clan, one of the ruling Gaelic families of Kerry. It was one of the last strongholds in Munster to fall to Cromwellian forces in 1652. The castle has been carefully restored and is open for guided tours. Boat trips on Lough Leane depart from the jetty beside the castle.
